Red Roses

A red rose traditionally symbolises love, particularly passionate or new love, and also love that is headstrong and overwelming.

This symbolism stems back to Greek and Roman: Venus / Aphrodite loved Adonis, but was also pursued by Mars / Ares. Ares planned to slay Adonis, but Aphrodite warned her lover of the intent and he escaped. During her rush to save her lover Aphrodite tripped and cut her leg on the thorns of a rose bush and her blood stained the flower red.

Often a single red rose is given to a lover to signify how unique and special that person is. The person is not one rose in a bunch, but singular and unique.

Red roses in bloom also stand for respect and courage, where as red rosebuds mean “pure and lovely”.

A classic dark red HT. Oval buds, carried singly on a strong stem, open to large full flowers that stand well up to wet weather. A lighter colour towards the base gives it a glowing, very attractive appearance until petals drop. Repeats well throughout the season. (Tantau - 1998)

We thought this variety was gone forever but luckily we found 2 plants on the nursery 3 years ago and from those plants we have managed to bring this rose back into the collection. It would be a shame to see this one go again we are the last to grow it and it is one of the loveliest in its class. Deep red semi-double blooms the same colour of the dress coat of the Chelsea Pensioners of the royal hospital Chelsea for whom it is named. The foliage is grey-green and growth is upright. I was so excited to find it I forgot to take photo, we'll have to wait until this summer, sorry. (Mattock - 1982)
