Hybrid Tea Roses

In this group are the hybrid tea bush roses with large double blooms, heavily petalled and forming a conical centre. They usually have three to seven flowers on a stem. Each plant, if looked after well, will flower almost continuously from June until the end of September - or longer if there are no severe frosts. The blooms are ideal for cutting; and the plants, if pruned each Spring to 6-9 inches will last for 20 years or more.

Floribunda Roses

In this group are the bush roses which produce many blooms in clusters on each stem. They make very colourful bedding displays and some of the more heavily petalled are good for cutting. They flower almost continually from June until late September and often much later if there are no severe frosts. By pruning to 9 inches to 12 inches each Spring and looking after the plants they should last for 20 years or more. They range in height and fragrance.

Patio Miniature Roses

These grow to a height of 6-24 inches. Use them as edging plants, in front of other plants or in a narrow border on their own, some make an attractive small hedge. They look well planted in groups 3-5 of each variety. They are not houseplants and are as hardy as larger roses. Patio miniature roses grow compact and bushy and are wonderful varieties for planting in tubs.

Shrub Roses

Shrub roses are best grown as a species or used as hedging - some make impenetrable barriers. Most shrub roses are fragrant, disease resistant and need little attention. They are a mixture of wild species, old garden roses from all over the world, plus hybrids developed over the last 100 years or so. The approximate size to which each shrub grows is shown, although you can keep larger shrubs within bounds by pruning. You can also peg them down as described in our section on Ground Cover Roses.

Ground Cover Roses

These roses are suitable for filling areas where low cover is needed. They can be trained on rockeries, cover unsightly objects or add interest to an old tree stump. They can be most effective as container grown roses giving a trailing effect when planted in tubs or pots. Ground covers can not only be trained along the ground, but also used as small climbers through hedges or over metalwork in the garden, they are very versatile and useful plants.

Climbing Roses

Climbing roses are extremely versatile and good value for money. They can climb into trees, over unsightly buildings, along fences or against walls, pillars or pergolas. Generally, climbers have large flowers and bloom repeatedly throughout summer and autumn. There are also patio climbing roses which grow well in large containers over arches or in a courtyard garden. All vary in height and fragrance.

Rambling Roses

Rambling roses usually have large clusters of small flowers, giving a mass of colour in early summer and flower on the previous year's wood. Some Rambling roses can reach 25ft +, so make sure you have the room for them and double check before buying. Although they’re often only once flowering, they can put on a display for up to 6/8 weeks and really do look spectacular for that time.
